Twenty-two people were killed when a bus rammed into a stationary trailer in central Nigeria's Kogi state during a routine check by customs, police said on Monday.

"The accident happened yesterday on Okene-Lokoja road. The driver of the bus crashed into the trailer that was being checked by men of the customs service," a senior police officer said by telephone.

"Twenty-two people lost their lives in the crash," he said.

Accidents on Nigeria's poorly-maintained inter-city roads are common.
